{"id":590,"date":"2015-04-29T13:18:04","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T13:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/?p=590"},"modified":"2015-04-29T13:18:04","modified_gmt":"2015-04-29T13:18:04","slug":"managing-editor-of-banned-womens-publication-hopes-for-reversal-of-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/?p=590","title":{"rendered":"Managing Editor of Banned Women\u2019s Publication Hopes for Reversal of Decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Iran\u2019s Press Oversight Committee has decided to suspend publication of Iran\u2019s premier women\u2019s magazine, Zanan-e Emrooz [Today\u2019s Women], and forward its case for prosecution to the Iranian Judiciary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Bc0EGvlCUAEazbx.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-591\" src=\"http:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Bc0EGvlCUAEazbx-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"Bc0EGvlCUAEazbx\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Bc0EGvlCUAEazbx-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/english.bashariyat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Bc0EGvlCUAEazbx.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>In an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, the publication\u2019s managing editor, Shahla Sherkat, said that she hoped to be able to convince the court to allow resumption of the monthly magazine\u2019s publication.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Mehr News Agency announced the decision by the Press Oversight Committee, stating that the reason for the ban was the publication\u2019s promotion and justification of \u201cwhite marriages\u201d a term used by state officials to describe the co-habitation of unmarried couples.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cI have not been formally served with the notice of the decision. I read about the ban on my publication in the news,\u201d said Shahla Sherkat. \u201cConsidering the license has not been revoked, and it\u2019s only suspended, I am hopeful I can convince the court with my reasoning, and that we can pursue our operation again,\u201d she added.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Zanan-e Emrooz began publication in June 2014, and was suspended on the threshold of publishing its eleventh issue. Prior to starting Zanan-e Emrooz, Shahla Sherkat was the Managing Editor of Iran\u2019s prominent Zanan magazine for 16 years, which was banned on February 17, 2008, for publishing content that angered many hardliners, such as advocating for equal rights for women in divorce, child custody, and inheritance, among other issues. After the ban on Zanan, Shahla Sherkat pursued a license for another women\u2019s publication for almost seven years before she was granted a license for Zanan-e Emrooz.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>According to Mehr News, the Press Oversight Committee considered content in Zanan-e Emrooz magazine \u201cagainst public chastity, based on Article 6, Item 2 of the Press Law.\u201d Sherkat told the Campaign that she has never received any prior notices from government officials about her publication\u2019s content.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cI read in the news that the reason for the ban is content about \u2018white marriage,\u2019 published in an issue. I will have to wait until the court date. I have always been hopeful, and I remain hopeful this time that everything will be resolved, so that we are able to resume work again,\u201d she told the Campaign.
