Reports show that many detainees face torture, mistreatment, death in custody, deprivation of a fair trial, and the risk of arbitrary executions.

Research examined by Human Rights Watch shows that senior officials of the Islamic Republic, security agencies, intelligence services, and the judiciary—including FARAJA, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the IRGC Intelligence Organization, the Ministry of Intelligence, and the Prosecutor’s Office—have implemented a coordinated and widespread operational plan to suppress protests and conceal the events of Dey. This report reveals that many detainees are held in informal detention facilities without access to family or a lawyer. Forced confessions are extracted under pressure, including from children, and broadcast on state TV (IRIB) to instil fear and intimidation in society. Simultaneously, severe security restrictions in certain cities and the enforced disappearance of several detainees further reveal the dimensions of this systematic crackdown.

Golmohammad Mohammadi, one of the detainees in the Meydan-e Alikhani case in Isfahan who was executed in Tir 1405 [June–July 2026], was subjected to severe torture from the first day of his arrest according to reports. According to an informed source, agents broke two of his fingers and whipped him multiple times every day during the first month of his detention. His family also faced security obstacles in choosing an independent lawyer, and after his execution, his body was buried without holding a public ceremony. Mohammad Mohammadi is only one of the individuals who disclosed torture in Iranian detention centers. Previously, Arash Sadeghi, Vahid Afkari, Habib Afkari, and several others reported torture, forced confessions, solitary confinement, and deprivation of medical care during their detention. Another example is Bektash Abtin, poet, writer, and member of the Iranian Writers’ Association, who lost his life in Evin Prison after contracting COVID-19 due to delayed hospital transfer and medical care; a case documented by human rights organizations as an example of prisoners being deprived of timely medical treatment.

Vida Rabbani, journalist and political prisoner, is among those who spoke about and documented medical deprivation, solitary confinement, psychological pressure, and violations of prisoners’ rights during her detention and imprisonment. She also made a bracelet out of her hair pulled out in prison—a bracelet that later became one of the recognized images of her narrative of prison conditions.

According to reports from international bodies, following the protests of Dey 1404 [December 2025–January 2026], tens of thousands of people were arrested across Iran. Furthermore, from Esfand 1404 to Ordibehesht 1405 [February–May 2026], more than 6,000 others were arbitrarily arrested, and at least 39 political executions were recorded during the same period. Detainees have faced the risk of torture, enforced disappearance, unfair trials, and execution.

Execution: A Sentence with No Turning Back

Based on documented information, testimonies, and reports published by independent human rights organizations, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, physical and psychological torture, prolonged solitary confinement, deliberate medical deprivation, extraction of forced confessions, pressure on families, trials contrary to fair trial principles, and summary executions are considered examples of serious and systematic human rights violations.

These actions, in addition to being contrary to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, conflict with international commitments, including:

Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Article 32: Prohibition of arbitrary arrest

Article 38: Prohibition of torture and invalidity of confessions under torture

Article 39: Prohibition of insulting the dignity and honor of prisoners

Convention Against Torture

Article 1: Definition of torture

Article 2: Obligation to prevent torture

Article 15: Inadmissibility of statements obtained through torture

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article 3: Right to life for all

Article 5: Torture is prohibited

Article 9: No unlawful arrest, detention, or exile

Article 10: Right to a legal trial for all

Defense of Human Rights Association in Iran

North Germany Region Representation

Translated by Alireza Jahan Bin

No to Torture, No to Forced Confession Following the events of Dey 1404 [December 2025–January 2026], especially the widespread killings on Dey 18 and 19 [January 8–9, 2026], a broad wave of arrests began across Iran.
